Styling Book Shelves

Shelf Styling 101 - 6 Tips to Get You Started

Shelf styling is one of our favourite decorating techniques but it can be a bit overwhelming.  Styling shelves is a process and can take several days of moving items around and eliminating or adding different items.  If you're thinking about updating your shelves or decorating for the first time, we have a few tips to help you out!

Step 1 - Start with a blank canvas

No matter what kind of shelves you're styling, always empty them first and start from a blank canvas. This way you can see the space you're working with in a new light.

Step 2 - Gather all your items together

Put all your treasures on a table or counter so you can see everything.  You don't have to use every item but it's easier to have everything in front of you.

Step 3 - Use books

Books are a great way to create different heights and add some colour and interest.

Step 4 - Use greenery

The best way to breathe a little bit of life into any space is by adding some plants or flowers either faux or real.  Use a variety of pots and containers to put them in from bowls, to pitchers, to baskets.

Step 5 - Colour Flow

Use one or two colours throughout to create flow.  More than two colours can get too busy and it won't be pleasing to the eye.

Step 6 - Group items

Keep things simple and do not over decorate,  the result will not look great.  Put two items of similar size shape individually on a shelf or group items in threes.
